Florence in the Age of the Medici: Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (ARTH 217)
Hailing from the Mugello Valley in northern Tuscany, the Medici settled in Florence in the late Middle Ages and established themselves as wool merchants and bankers. By the middle of the Quattrocentothrough a combination of ruthless ambition and political intrigue this once obscure family had become the most powerful in the city, eventually subverting the Republic and establishing itself as a totalitarian dynasty. Under the enlightened leadership of Cosimo, Piero, and Lorenzo de Medici, Florence became a celebrated center of Renaissance art and culture in Italy.
In this course, we will consider the painting, sculpture, and architecture of Medicean Florence from the time of Giovanni di Bicci, founder of the Medici Bank, through the reign of Cosimo I, who expanded his realm to include all of present-day Tuscany. Our emphasis will be on the artistic patronage of the Medici themselves and on their chief political and economic competitors. We will consider the principal Florentine works of such masters as Brunelleschi, Donatello, Alberti, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Verrocchio, Ghirlandaio, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Pontormo, and Bronzino.
