History and Mystery of Design (ARTH 156)
We suddenly find ourselves in a world in which pretty much everything around usfrom our kitchen gadgets to our emergency rooms and our national parkshas been designed. What exactly does that mean? What is this new orientation toward human activity that everyone now calls design? In this course, we will trace the astonishing rise of design as an inventory of objects, a method of research, a strategy of business, and a habit of mind. Although human beings have been making things for around two million years, the concept of design is barely 150 years old, the profession of designer no more than 70, and a serious understanding of designwhether as creative art or as rigorous sciencehas yet to be realized.
In pursuit of this idea we will examine a vast array of products, buildings, landscapes, theories, personalities, companies, images, artworks, virtual and physical spaces, and more. We will subject our desktops, dashboards, kitchens, neighborhoods, and wardrobes to ruthless analysis, and work toward coming away with a dramatically new perspective on modern life.
