Introduction to Black-and-White Photography (ART 82)
Black-and-white photography is the primary foundation for learning to see photographically, for learning to draw with light. While technological advances in cameras improve ones chances of getting good results, they tend to make it more difficult for the photographer to control the nuances necessary to make expressive photographs. And that is where it helps to go back to the fundamentals of black-andwhite photography.
This foundational course introduces the student to the wet darkroom, film development, and printmaking, as well as to the full range of camera operation that will contribute to the making of expressive personal work. In addition to lectures and darkroom work, classroom critiques will address individual students needs. A slide lecture showing historic examples will illustrate key photographic concepts. In addition to the regular class schedule, there will be a weekend field trip to SFMOMA.
Please bring a manual 35mm camera to the first class. This course is not for digital photographers.
