The Portrait (ART 217 B)
Much is at stake in a photographic portrait. It is not just a likeness but a proposition: that a human subject might be recorded and interpreted at once, that a likeness might simultaneously capture and release insight.
This studio course will offer hands-on practice in making photographic portraits. In a series of focused weekly assignments, we will consider both the formal and narrative aspects of portraits: how expression and gesture, timing and framing, design and composition, lighting and color, contextual and environmental information, and single and combined image formats all contribute to creating a sense of character, story, and metaphor. Both analogue and digital technologies may be used, and any type of camera will suffice. Work will be shared each week in the form of prints hung on the wall, and students will be responsible for arranging printing outside of class.
No photographic experience is necessary for this course,
and all photographic experience is relevant. The Stanford
darkroom will be available for student use during all
summer darkroom hours, but this course will not offer
darkroom or digital instruction.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to popular demand a 2nd session of this course was created.
