Going Digital: Techniques and Aesthetics for the New Photography (ART 180)
This hands-on course will develop solid techniques and explore aesthetic concerns for photographers working with digital photography.
On the technical side, we will explore how digital cameras are different from those that use film, and when and how the various processes of the computer should be applied. The primary aspects necessary for establishing a good workflow will be demonstrated, including the taking, processing, displaying, and storing of digital images. Color management for printing and basic use of Photoshop to enhance images will also be shown.
On the creative side, students will spend ample time developing their eye through a self-chosen project that will culminate in a portfolio of printed pieces or a digital book project. Work produced from class assignments will be reviewed, and presentations of contemporary and historical photography will be made to enhance an understanding of what makes a good picture good.
This course is intended for intermediate-level students. Some prior experience with photography, computers, and self-direction is expected.
