Mesopotamia: The Archaeology and Culture of Ancient Iraq (ARC 124)
In this course, we will survey the history and culture of ancient Iraq, otherwise known as Mesopotamia or the "Cradle of Civilization." Topics covered will include the first cities and the emergence of writing; the Royal Cemetery of Ur; Hammurabi (codified law in the ancient Near East); the Assyrian Empire and the Bible; and the legacy of Mesopotamia and how it is being reshaped by the ongoing war in Iraq.
This course is lecture-based and highly visual. The lectures will be accompanied by the viewing, analysis, and discussion of images. Readings will include excerpts from museum catalogues, art and archaeology journals, archaeological field reports, newspaper reports, and the Bible as well as ancient literature (The Epic of Gilgamesh) and legal documents (in translation).
